Government of India has introduced the Craftsmen Training Scheme in 1950. To maintain same level of training through out the country National Council for Vocational Training ( N.C.V.T ) wasestablished in 1956. The function of N.C.V.T. is to lay down the training policies, design the syllabus of new course, decide the standards, norms required for the training (manpower, floor area ,Electricity required , Machinery and Equipment etc.) & award National Trade Certificate.

Minister of labor chairs the National council, with members representing Central and State government departments, employer and worker organizations, professional and learned bodies. This scheme was initially implemented by Central government but from 1969 it is being implemented by state Government & all the expenses on training is done by State Government.

Industrial Training Institute (Girls), Dadar , Mumbai-28 has been established by the Government of Maharashtra vide G.R.No. TSA/1084/36758/419/TR-4, Date 12/06/1984 at VIDYAVIHAR, taking into consideration of rapid industrial developments in Maharashtra in general and particular of Woman occupations from August 1984. The institute was functioning at VIDYAVIHAR till 31/08/1989, Thereafter, on 01/09/1989, Institute was shifted at DADAR in newly constructed 7th own building.
