Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) are government –run training institutes that offer training in various technical streams. ITI were established by Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGET), Ministry of Labour & Employment, Union Government of India. The sole aim behind the establishment of the ITI s is to provide technical manpower to the fast emerging industrial sector of the developed and the developing economy.
ITI provide technical knowledge in various trades ( both engineering and non-engineering) to candidates who have at least passed their 5th std examinations and who wish to acquire some technical knowledge instead of going for conventional higher studies.
All the ITI are affiliated to NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training), Government of India. Training in these institutes are provided free of cost or a nominal fee is charged. Most of the ITI are equipped with big libraries, laboratories, sports & hostel facilities. Medical facilities are also provided in all the ITI s in the country. Syllabi of several trades are revised from time to time to keep pace with changing technology in the industry. DGET also seeks assistance from foreign companies for providing demonstration kits, upgraded machineries and equipment.
Courses offered at the ITI are broadly divided into two namely, engineering and non- engineering trades. Some of the trades that belong to the engineering category are architectural assistant, electrician, electronic mechanic, instrument mechanic, electroplater, marine fitter etc.
Dress making, domestic housekeeping, data entry operator, dairying, digital photographer, hair & skin care, embroidery & needle work etc. are some of the trades that belong to non –engineering category.
