Government Industrial training Institute, Thanjavur is situated near Raja Raja Mani Mandapam and is well-connected by roads and railways with cities and towns in Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is Tiruchirapalli International Airport located at a distance of 56 kilometres. The nearest seaport is Nagapattinam which is 84 kilometres (52 mi) from Thanjavur. The nearest Railway Station is in the heart of the city itself.

This I.T.I. was transferred from District Industrial School in the year 1962 and functioning as Govt. Industrial Training Institute, Thanjavur from the Year 1962 onwards. The total area of this I.T.I. is 16.80 Acres.

The Building was Constructed by Public works Department. This Institute consists of Main Workshop and annexure Workshops. For Boys,Trainees Hostel is provided. From year 2007 onwards under the aid of World Bank New Advance Model Building constructed, and renovation work taken for all Buildings at a total cost of 100 Lakhs.
From 2007 onwards this Institute is upgraded as Centre of Excellence, and a new course introduced as Fabrication (Fitting and welding) with the aim of providing multi skill. Every year about 125 trainees are admitted for this Course and completing their course in One year and Specialised Modules in the next Two Half years.

After completion of Basic Training suitable Placement are given to the trainees in all trades.

In the year of 2006 for Institute Development Institute management committee formed with five Industrial Members and One Regional Joint Director, Trichirappalli, One District Employment Officer, One Senior Faculty, One Principal, Four Government Officials, with two trainees total eleven members.

This Institute is under Centre of Excellence Now Fabrication (Fitting and Welding) , Sector introduced to develop multi skill for trainees.
