I am Post Graduate in Commerce with 65%marks. I want to do MA in Social work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai. There is an Essay test in Entrance Test of TISS relating to topic "contemporary social issues". I want to prepare for it. What books, magzines should I refer. I already read 'The Hindu' & 'the Times of India' regularly

It's good that you are already reading 'The Hindu' and "The Times of India' on a regular basis. This will help broaden your understanding and be comfortable with issues grappling the country. You would do well to read magazines such as 'India Today', 'Outlook', 'The week' etc. which carry articles on current and contemporary issues in Indian political- socio- economic environment. Try getting a hand on international publications such as 'The Economist', 'UN & World bank reports' etc. to get a broader and global perspective on contemporary issues.

The aim of TISS is to test your understanding, ideas and opinions. So, the more varied your reading, the better equipped you will be.

For instance, you can expect questions like

1) What is your opinion on Human cloning and its impact on social evolution.

2) What is your take on Religious conversion, its impact on the moral fabric of the Indian society

3) India achieves 100% literacy by 2010. A myth or a fulfilling promise
