An Aerospace Engineer finds job opportunities in airlines like Air India, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, and British Airways; aircraft development, research & manufacturing organisations like Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) and Airbus; Indian Air Force; defence research organizations like DRDO (Defense Research & Development Organization); aerospace technology research organisations like National Aeronautical Lab; space research organisations like ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), NASA (National Aeronautics & Space Administration); aviation infrastructure development and maintenance organization like Airport Authority of India. For the airlines, aircraft manufacturing companies and aviation infrastructure companies, your B. Tech will be an adequate qualification. However for jobs in research and development, you will be better off with a M. Tech/ MS or even a Ph.D. You can get jobs both in India and abroad. Abroad jobs are easier to get if you have a good experience in India. Getting a job abroad will be easier for you if you do your Post graduate studies from Universities abroad or from IITs.

Jobs in the airlines and manufacturing industry are limited in number but so is the number of aerospace engineers. So, there is dearth of jobs in this sector. Career prospects in research and development are good as the airline industry is always looking for new airplanes that are bigger, better, more economical and off late more environment friendly. That is how the Boeing 707 developed into the 747 and now into the 747-400. But now airlines want new generation planes able to take thrice as many passengers at many times the speed of sound. The race is on to develop this next generation airline. Which means that aerospace engineers are a lot in demand.

Space is another booming field with the need to launch communication and weather satellites into various orbits. Space vacations may become a reality sooner than we think, thanks to the landmark space flight taken by US millionaire Dennis Tito. Defence as usual is an industry, which constantly requires new and better technologies, and so need aerospace engineers among other engineers and technologists.
